Bucs Minicamp Day 2: Kinder Gentler Schiano?

Bucs Minicamp Day 2: Kinder Gentler Schiano?

By Tom Krasniqi

The players knew the drill last season.  A new sheriff was in town and his job was to instill discipline and change the lackadaisical culture that existed at One Buc Place.  Greg Schiano accomplished that goal.  The Bucs played smarter football and players were held accountable.

Now that the culture has been established, will we see a kinder and gentler Schiano in year 2?  Schiano mentioned recently that he will ease up on his team but some players don’t believe that will be the case.  “I wouldn’t expect it”, says defensive end Adrian Clayborn after Wednesday’s minicamp practice.  “He’s definitely a little bit more loose than he was last season.  I like his fire so I hope he doesn’t lose too much of that”.

Wideout Mike Williams isn’t buying it at all.  “Nah, no way”, Williams laughed when asked if Schiano will take it easy on his players this season.  At the same time, Williams and the Bucs now know how Schiano operates.

Now that the players know what to expect from Schiano, they can focus on the task at hand and that’s winning football games.  “We know how he coaches now.  We know his techniques and basically what he wants us to do.  That helped us win more games last season and hopefully that will get us in the playoffs this season”, says Williams.  Williams described his head coach as “over-intense”.

Wideout Vincent Jackson says Schiano breaks down the game “like no one I’ve ever seen” and says his attention to detail makes him a terrific young head coach.  VJax loves Schiano’s “do your job” philosophy that he preaches.  If everyone does their job in 2013, this Bucs team can be a very dangerous team.

News & Notes:

  • The Bucs signed QB Mike Glennon to a 4-year deal.  Glennon was the last remaining draft pick unsigned.  All 6 draft picks are now signed.
  • Glennon had a rough time today.  He fumbled a snap, botched a handoff and threw and threw an interception to rookie Johnthan Banks.
  • Banks says he’s getting more comfortable with the defense: “One a scale of 1 to 10, I’m probably a 7”.
  • A blitzing OLB LaVonte David recorded a ‘sack’ of QB Josh Freeman today.  Expect to see more blitzing from David this season.
  • Here’s the update from Schiano on guards Carl Nicks (toe) and Davin Joseph (knee): “They’re coming along.  We’re not going to rush them”.  They expect to be ready for training camp.
  • Safety Mark Barron and DE Da’Quan Bowers left practice early because of the oppressive heat.  Schiano says there’s a stomach flu bug going around too.
  • Schiano says Dekoda Watson is ‘locked in’ right now at SLB.  Watson is competing with free agent Johnathan Casillas and Adam Hayward for that spot.  Watson says he’s only playing the SAM spot.
  • The final day of Bucs minicamp is Thursday before the players get a few weeks off before training camp.  Schiano says rookies will likely report on July 18th with veterans coming in on July 24 or 25.  Your place for the best Bucs coverage is 620 WDAE and 95.3FM, your home of the Bucs.
