TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - There's now another direct flight from Tampa to Cuba.
Tampa International Airport has announced an 11th flight to Cuba--this one, to Havana.
The Tampa Bay Area has the third largest Cuban-American population in the U.S..
Airport director Joe Lopano says he's been focused on boosting international travel to and from Tampa.
"We're gonna start flights to Panama on December 17th. We have 11 flights to Cuba. We started new flights to Zurich, Switzerland. We have daily flights to London."
Lopano says, since Tampa International began direct flights to Cuba a couple of years ago, there have been more than 92,000 passengers who have flown to Cuba.
Tampa congresswoman Kathy Castor says she hopes this latest flight will be one step towards normalizing relations between the U.S. and Cuba.
"We have got to press policymakers--local, state and federal--to begin a new dialogue with Cuba to modernize the relationship so that we can serve families better."
