‘Do Not Call’ list tops 647,000, text messages may be added

Tallahassee, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Since the state of Florida removed the $10 registration fee and $5 annual fee for individuals to sign up for the statewide Do Not Call list two years ago, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam’s office released information Wednesday showing nearly 575,000 phone numbers have been added to the list so that individuals are not bothered at home by telemarketers, solicitors and scammers.

“Since eliminating the fee to subscribe, Florida's Do Not Call List has grown exponentially,” said Commissioner Putnam. “We're proud to prevent more than 645,000 Floridians from being bothered by unwanted sales calls,” the statement said in the release.

Currently, there is a bill pending in the legislature that would add text messages to the Do Not Call list.

SB 450, proposed by Sen. Jeff Clemens, was passed by the Florida Senate, while its House companion, HB 1191 by Rep. Janet Cruz, awaits a final vote on the House floor.

Before the fee was eliminated on April 23, 2012, there were 71,460 phone numbers on the statewide list, according to the release, and now, there are 647,481 phone numbers subscribed, protecting hundreds of thousands of Florida consumers.

The bill proposed in 2012 by Sen. Anitere Flores (SB 888) and Rep. Dana Young (HB 749) allowed the department to eliminate the fee for consumers. An increase in penalties for violations of Florida’s Do Not Call List helps cover the cost of administering the program, the release stated.

Anyone who would like to add a number to the list can call 1-800-HELP-FLA(435-7352) or, for Spanish speakers, 1-800-FL-AYUDA (352-9832). You can also sign up for the list online at www.800helpfla.com. The state’s Do Not Call list is updated quarterly and available to solicitors upon request. It is illegal for solicitors to make telephone calls to phone numbers on Florida’s Do Not Call list.
