Epiphany Celebration preps underway

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (970 WFLA) - The 107th Epiphany Celebration in Tarpon Springs is Monday and preparations are already underway. 

Forty-four teenage boys from the Greek Orthodox community will dive for a cross thrown in the waters of Spring Bayou by the Arch Bishop.

Spokeswoman Johanna Kossifidis explains the purpose of the celebration saying “Epiphany is celebrated every year on January 6th and it’s actually a commemoration of the Baptism of Jesus Christ.”

The boys who will dive for the cross are setting up the dingys in Spring Bayou Friday. 

There will be a blessing of the fleet at the Sponge Docks on Sunday and the dive for the cross will happen about 1 p.m. on Monday.

Twenty to 30,000 people are expected to attend.

City of Tarpon Springs:

The following roads will be closed from 10:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday for Epiphany events:

Pinellas Avenue/Alt. U.S. 19, between Pine and Lemon streets

Tarpon Avenue, from Ring Avenue to Spring Bayou

Spring Boulevard between Orange and Court Streets
