Fla. election chief halts voter purge for 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida's top election official is halting for now a plan to remove non-U.S. citizens from the state's voter rolls.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner on Thursday informed Florida's election supervisors that he is delaying the effort until next year because of changes underway with a federal database the state is using to help identify potential ineligible voters.

Gov. Rick Scott first pushed to have the state look for non-U.S. citizens on the rolls before the 2012 election.

But many election supervisors, however, did not wind up removing anyone after questions arose about the law and the accuracy of the list.

Detzner in his letter to supervisors said the changes in the federal database will help enhance the reliability of finding potential ineligible voters.
