Hillsborough School Board Settles With Family Of Special Needs Student

TAMPA, Fla., (970 WFLA) - The Hillsborough County School Board has approved a $600,000 settlement with the family of Jennifer Caballero.

The 11-year-old, who had Down Syndrome, had wandered away from her P.E. class at Rogers Middle School in Tampa in October of 2012.  Her body was found later that day in a nearby pond where she had drowned.

Several teachers and adminisrators at the school either resigned or were fired.  This case, and another involving the death of a wheelchair-bound student, prompted the district to reevaluate the way it supervises and cares for special needs students.

Jennifer's family did not sue the district, but the law firm representing them did negotiate a settlement.

School board member Susan Valdez says she hopes the money will help the family.

"I'm hoping that, in the name of Jenny, that her siblings would be able to do well and reach their educational goals in the name of their baby sister."
