TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - There hasn't been a recreation trail spanning the bay since the old Gandy Bridge became the Friendship Trail Bridge. But it's been closed for the past several years because it's falling apart
Welcome, the new Courtney Campbell Causeway Pedestrian Bridge that connects Tampa's Ben T. Davis Beach with the Pinellas County line.
The new recreation trial is 45-feet-high and is 3,200-feet-long. It has opened to the public this week.
The Department of Transportation's Kris Carson says it's a safe place for pedestrians and cyclists. And there's more to come.
Once crews put the finishing touches on the east span they'll begin the second phase, which will be the western span that will connect Clearwater to the Hillsborough County line.
The $14.6 million dollar pedestrian bridge is funded by a federal grant. The grand opening will take place November 16.
