One dead, one injured in Wesley Chapel movie theatre shooting

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A male suspect is in custody after the Pasco County Sheriff's Office says two people were shot inside the Grove 16 Movie Theatre off of Wesley Grove Boulevard in Wesley Chapel.

Deputies said their investigation reveals the suspect, Curtis Reeves, a retired Tampa Police Department captain, was sitting inside the theater with his wife to see the film ‘Lone Survivor.’ Sitting in front of him, deputies said, was another couple - Chad Oulson and his wife Nichole Oulson.

Detectives say Chad Oulson was using his cell phone during the previews before the film started and Reeves asked him to stop several times.

PCSO said at one point, Reeves got up and left the theater and returned to his seat.

Deputies said Mr. Oulson asked him if he reported him for using his phone to theatre management.  Then, deputies said the two men started arguing and Reeves pulled out a handgun shooting Chad Oulson in the once in the chest. Deputies said his wife Nichole placed her hand over her husband receiving an injury to her hand from the shot. Deputies said Mr. Oulson later died as a result of his injury.

PCSO also said inside the theater, an off-duty Sumter County Deputy detained Mr. Reeves until our deputies arrived while two off-duty nurses tried to help the victim.

Deputies said the theater had an estimated 25 people inside at the time of the shooting.

PCSO said Curtis Reeves is being charged with second degree homicide.

Tampa Police said Reeves retired from the Tampa Police Department 1993 and that he was instrumental in establishing the department's first tactical response team.
