Police: Man tells officers

SARASOTA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Sarasota Police said Charles Williams, 41, of Bradenton, has been charged with felony possession of crack cocaine after they say he told officers "I don't smoke cigarettes, I smoke weed."

Sarasota PD said in a news release that officers were on patrol in the area of Whitaker Park when they observed several people sitting at a table on the north end of the park.

Police said as officers approached the people sitting at the table, they noticed Williams turn around on the bench where he was sitting and drop a cigarette box to the ground. Sarasota PD said officers told Williams he dropped his cigarettes in which he said "I don't smoke cigarettes, I smoke weed."

Officers retrieved the cigarette box from the ground and opened it and inside was a small, blue colored transparent baggie containing what appeared to be four (4) pieces of suspected crack cocaine, according to a police department spokesperson. Police said officers conducted a field test on the suspected cocaine which was positive.

Police said Williams was placed under arrest for possession of crack cocaine and taken to the Sarasota County Jail.
