Police Shooting in St. Pete Leaves One Woman Dead

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA/ AP)- A St. Petersburg police officer fatally shot a 53-year-old woman who pointed a gun at him.

Police say officers went to the home of 53 year-old Pamela Dale Kirk on Sunday night to check on her welfare. A neighbor had called police earlier, saying the woman had been acting strangely all day.

Field training officer Christopher Dolch and his trainee, Nicholas Cardinal, went to the front door, knocked and announced their presence. a backup officer went to the back door and knocked. The woman pulled back the curtain on window next to the back door and pointed a silver Smith and Wesson .38 special revolver at the officer(s).

A police report says the officer fired three times through the window, possibly striking the woman twice.

An investigation continues. The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
