Thousands of hams' descend on the agricultural center

PLANT CITY, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Thousands of hams will be at the Agricultural Center on the Strawberry Festival Fairgrounds in Plant City Friday and Saturday.

It's for the 38th Annual Ham Radio Convention.

Volunteer Spokesperson with the American Radio Relay League Warren Elly explains how it all began;

“Ham radio really is the original social network and as it developed as the technology grew the government established a federal radio commission which ended up giving the radiometers the worst possible frequency. Let the hams have that and we’ll develop the other frequencies for commercial use,” Elly said.

At Hamfest, you'll see everything from cutting edge internet and electronic technology to antique wireless equipment and hard to find electronic parts.

The fairgrounds is located at 2508 W. Oak Avenue, Plant City, FL 33563. Hours:

Friday 11am-8pm

Saturday 7am-5pm
