Three in custody after early morning chase

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Three people are in custody after an early morning chase in St. Petersburg, police said.

It all began just before 3:30 when officers spotted a blue 2014 Volkswagen Jetta in the area of 18th Avenue South and 14th Street. Police say the car was reported stolen on Aug. 5th from the 900 block of Eden Isle Blvd NE in St. Petersburg after the owner told police a spare set of keys may have been left in the car when it was taken.

Officers tried to stop the car in the area of 20th Avenue South and 15th Street, but police say the driver failed to yield and drove directly at a K-9 officer's cruiser causing him to avoid a collision. Then, after a ten-minute chase, the driver lost control of the car and hit an unoccupied parked car in the driveway of 3001 22nd Avenue South.

Police say the driver and two other people inside were all taken into custody. Of the three, two were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not serious.
