TIA Expansion Gets Go-Ahead

TIA Expansion Gets Go-Ahead

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) -Hilllsborough Aviation Authority board members have cleared the way for a big airport expansion.

The first phase is expected to be completed by 2017.  It would expand the main terminal and construct a car rental hub reached by automated people mover from the main terminal.

Airport executives hope one day that people mover will also connect to a multi-modal transportation center in Tampa's Westshore district.

In the long-term future, planners want to build an international airside.  The entire plan would  accommodate 34.7 million yearly passengers over the next few decades.

Meantime, board members also approved by a 6-1 vote a $500,000 bonus for airport CEO Joe Lopano if he stays for five years.  He insists he will.  Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn voted against the bonus.
