TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a ‘wrong way’ crash on I-275 early Sunday morning in Tampa that left five people dead.
Troopers said at 2:12am, a Ford Expedition being driven by an unidentified driver was traveling the wrong way going southbound on Interstate 275 in the northbound lanes, and a Hyundai Sonata with four people inside was traveling in its correct lane.
Just north of the Busch Boulevard exit near the 50 milepost, the SUV traveling in the wrong direction collided head-on with the Sonata.
Inside the Sonata, was four USF fraternity members of Sigma Beta Rho, troopers said, and all died at the scene.
Troopers said the SUV caught fire and became completely engulfed.
According to FHP, the wrong-way driver of the SUV also died at the scene. Due to extensive fire damage, FHP said the identity of the SUV driver remains unknown pending medical identification and next-of-kin notification.
FHP said they are working to figure out where the SUV entered the wrong way onto Interstate 275 and whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
