Steven Stamkos' breakaway goal with just over five minutes to play broke a 1-1 tie, giving the Lightning, their fifth win in six games, a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild Thursday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
The Bolts got on the board in the first after Jason Pominville took a tripping penalty with just under eight minutes to play in the period. Tampa Bay got to work, and as the power play would down, Valteri Filppula would find Tyler Johnson in the left facoff circle from across the ice, and the forward would pound the puck past Josh Harding for a 1-0 lead.
Neither team would tally in the second period, but each killed off a pair of penalties that saw both the Lightning and Wild get good scoring opportunities, including a two-on-none breakaway by Stamkos and Alex Killorn that was stopped by Josh Harding.
Tampa Bay allowed the game to get tied midway through the third after Minnesota took the puck away from Valteri Filppula and eventually Mikko Koivu ended up wristing home his first goal of 2013 with just under nine minutes to play.
Matt Cooke gave the Bolts a tremendous opportunity after taking a double-minor for high-sticking with under eight minutes to play, but Killorn was called for tripping midway through the first penalty, leading to the 4-on-4, which Stamkos took a feed from Matt Carle and went in alone on Harding, beating him stick-side high.
Sami Salo added an empty-net goal to set the score.
Tampa Bay will welcome in the Boston Bruins to the Tampa Bay Times Forum Saturday.
