Ovechkin Scores Twice In 4-2 Caps Win Over Lightning

In what could have been a playoff preview, the Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the Washington Capitals for the second straight night by a score of  4-2.  Alex Ovechkin notched two goals for the Capitals as they defeated the Bolts in the Lightning’s first trip to Washington D.C. this season.

Ben Bishop drops his second game in as many days stopping 34 of 37 Capitals shots.  He was bested by Capitals’ goaltender Michal Neuvirth who saved 28 of 30 Tampa Bay shots.  Vinny Lecavalier had a goal and assist and Marty St. Louis had an assist giving his 899 points in 900 career games as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Lightning held a one goal lead into the second period when Ovechkin redirected a Jack Hillen slapshot past Bishop for the Caps’ first goal.  Alex Killorn continued his fine play with a break away goal on Neuvirth which gave the Lightning the lead back with thirteen minutes left in the second period.

The Caps finished the period with two unanswered tallies.  John Carlson with a slap shot from the point which was tipped off the stick of Eric Brewer tied the game for Washington.  Four minutes later Joel Ward skated past the defense and lit the lamp for the Capitals going top shelf over Bishop’s right shoulder to give the Caps the lead 3-2.

Alex Ovechkin added the empty net goal for his 25th of the season tying him with Steven Stamkos for the league lead.

The Bolts will now return home for two games this week.  They host Ottawa on Tuesday night with the conference leader Pittsburgh coming in to the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Thursday night.
