Schiano On Barth Injury: It's A Shame

Training camp is underway for the rookies and 1st year players over at One Buc Place.  Veterans report next Wednesday but Connor Barth won't be one of them.  Barth is done for the season with a torn Achilles tendon suffered while playing in a charity basketball game.

On Thursday, head coach Greg Schiano spoke for the first time about Barth's injury.  "It's a shame.  We lost a very consistent performer.  A guy I thought was a very big part of what we were doing", Schiano says of Barth.  Schiano says Barth's accuracy and leg strength will be sorely missed.

The Bucs did sign former Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes to a 1-year deal.  Tynes was second in the NFL last season with 145 points so the Bucs were fortunate to find such a capable replacement.  Tynes doesn't have the leg that Barth has, but he has proven to be a clutch kicker.  Tynes made two game-winning field goals in two NFC titles games to send the Giants to two Super Bowls.

Schiano sidestepped the question on whether the team gave Barth permission to play in the basketball game.  Barth was placed on the non-football injury list, which means the team isn't obligated to pay him the $2.3-million base salary he was due to make in 2013.  It's not known if the team has made the decision to pay him.
