The Argument Of Drafting For Need Or Best Player Available

The lasting argument amongst football fans when it comes to the NFL Draft is if you were the franchise, do you draft for need or take the best talent available left on the board.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently have the seventh overall selection in the first round of the NFL Draft, and currently have holes at wide receiver and needs on the offensive and defensive lines.

So where would former NFL General Manager Charley Casserly go with the seventh overall selection?  He joined WDAE’s ‘The Sports Page’ on Wednesday and revealed what he would do with he were with the Buccaneers.

“You have to take the best player available because this is an inexact science,” said Casserly.  “Put them (top talent in the draft) up there the way you really think they are, take them that way and history will show you’ll end up having better drafts.  In the Bucs case certainly a top wide receiver would help, but there will be some talented wide receivers in the second and third rounds that if they hit it right that they’ll be better than Mike Williams (former Buccaneers WR) was.”

Casserly believes there isn’t a clear cut favorite as to who the first quarterback will be taken in the draft.  The former Houston Texans GM said all of the quarterbacks up for the draft this year are all still prospects and not ‘ready to play guys.’
