Alex Cobb's great week did not go unnoticed by the league.

The Rays pitcher, who went 2-0 with a 1.65 earned run average last week, earned recognition as American League Player of the Week.

The right-hander struck out 22 and walked three in 16.1 innings.  Cobb led the American League in innings pitched during the week period and was tied for most strikeouts and wins, while batters hit just .193 against him.

Cobb beat other nominees James Shields of the Royals (1-0, 0.64 ERA, 14 IP, 12 K), Ivan Nova of the Yankees (1-0 with a complete game shutout), Astros outfielder Chris Carter (.375 batting average with five extra-base hits), Twins infielder Brian Dozier (.400 average with ten hits), and Tigers DH Victor Martinez (.417 average with a home run and 6 RBI).

The award is Cobb's first, and he will receive a watch courtesy of Game Time.
