Cobb, Rodney shut out Yankees

by Steve Carney

Alex Cobb and Fernando Rodney combined on a four-hit shutout, and Ben Zobrist's two-run double gave the Rays all the offense they would need, as they defeated the New York Yankees 3-0 Wednesday at Tropicana Field.

Both Cobb and Andy Pettitte matched each other pitch for pitch until the fifth inning, when Pettitte hit Jose Molina with a pitch to start the inning.  Kelly Johnson then singled to right field, and each runner moved up an extra base when right fielder Brennan Boesch misplayed the baseball for an error.  Pettitte struck out both Desmond Jennings and Ryan Roberts, but Ben Zobrist picked up his teammates with a two-run double to open the scoring.

Sean Rodriguez led off the sixth with a solo homer off Pettitte (3-1) to set the score at 3-0.

Cobb (3-1) allowed a second-inning single to Eduardo Nunez, a fifth-inning single to Jayson Nix and a ninth-inning single to Brett Gardner in his 8 1/3 innings. Fernando Rodney gave up a single to Ichiro Suzuki

Tampa Bay finishes their six-game homestand with a 5-1 record.

The Rays will now start their second ten-game road trip of the month Thursday night in Chicago against the White Sox.  Jeremy Hellickosn (1-1, 3.55 ERA) will get the start against Chris Sale (1-2, 4.50 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 8:10, with coverage beginning at 7:30 on 1250 WHNZ and 98 ROCK.
