Could Alex Cobb's Season Be Over Following Concussion?

by Ryan Adams

Sometimes the bad gets worse and for the Tampa Bay Rays that's exactly what seems to be happening.  After their double-header sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, the Rays woke up Wednesday morning to more bad news.  Alex Cobb may be worse off than expected after taking the line drive off the side of his head last Saturday.  Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times was on with 620 WDAE's Rick Stroud and Ronnie Lane Wednesday morning and explained manager Joe Maddon's seemingly pessimistic view on Cobb's condition.

"I'd heard he as doing well, too," Topkin said.  "I'd heard something similar to the first part of Joe's answer which was he was feeling better, he was doing better, and obviously the concussion goes away, they hope, at some point.  So I was a little surprised when the answer was we don't know that he'll be back this year."

The saving grace could be David Price coming back to form after being shelved with a tricep injury in the coming weeks.

"He actually threw a bullpen," Topkin said on Price.  "They had him go down to Port Charlotte yesterday and he threw well."

The timeline on Price's return could have him back in the Rays rotation and ready to go by June 28 when the Rays host the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field.
