Friedman Says Trade With Padres "Addresses Weakness"

by Steve Carney / 620 WDAE

Tampa Bay had to say goodbye to a key piece of its bullpen in Alex Torres, but Andrew Friedman believes the haul they got Wednesday from San Diego in return for the left-hander helps them address weaknesses the 2014 team had.

"Logan Forsythe was a guy that we had tried to get previously, and a guy that was very high on our target list," executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said.  "From our standpoint, we dealt from an area of strength to address an area of weakness."

Forsythe joins reliever Brad Boxberger, minor-league pitchers Matt Andriese and Matt Lollis, and minor-league infielder Maxx Tissenbaum coming to Tampa Bay for Torres and minor-league pitcher Jesse Hahn.

Along with Forsythe, who Friedman said will be complimentary to and not competing with Sean Rodriguez, the Tampa Bay executive vice president says both Boxberger and possibly Lollis could be a part of this season's squad.

Friedman said Boxberger "has top-end ability" and "potential to be a high-leverage full-inning reliever," while Lollis is "a 6'9" good right-handed power arm."
