Hellickson leads Rays to three-hit shutout of A's

by Steve Carney

Jeremy Hellickson and a pair of relievers combined to throw a three-hit shutout, and Matt Joyce's home run was all the offense needed as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Oakland Athletics 1-0.

Hellickson threw the first seven innings, allowing all three hits while walking one and striking out six.  Oakland did not get a runner past first base all night.

Joyce's home run, his second of the year, came leading off the second against A's starter Jarrod Parker, who also pitched into the seventh, allowing six hits total, walking two and striking out five.

Joel Peralta worked a perfect eighth, and Fernando Rodney had Coco Crisp reach on an error by Ryan Roberts, but escaped without allowing Crisp to advance for his second save of the year.

Tampa Bay can finish off the sweep Sunday, as Roberto Hernandez (0-3, 5.79 ERA) faces Tommy Milone (3-0, 3.86 ERA).  First pitch is at 1:40, with coverage on 620 WDAE starting at 11:30 with Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
