No Place Like Home: Rays open homestand with win over A's

by Steve Carney

It seems like all the Tampa Bay Rays needed was a little home cooking.

Tampa Bay's hitters beat up on Brett Anderson and the Oakland bullpen, defeating the Athletics 8-3 Friday night at Tropicana Field.

Oakland actually had an early lead, as Coco Crisp led off the game with a double off Alex Cobb, moved to third base on a lineout by John Jaso, and after a walk to Seth Smith, scored on a base hit by Jed Lowrie.  Brandon Moss then singled in Smith to make it 2-0, but was picked off after making a wide turn at first base, and Chris Young grounded out to limit the damage.

Anderson couldn't hold the lead, as he walked Desmond Jennings to start the bottom half of the inning.  Jennings moved to second on a groundout by Kelly Johnson, and scored on a single by Ben Zobrist.

Evan Longoria struck out for the second out of the inning, but Shelley Duncan walked to extend the inning, and Sean Rodriguez's single brought in Zobrist to tie the game.

Ryan Roberts' infield single loaded the bases, and Jose Lobaton delivered run homer by a two-run single to give Tampa Bay a 4-2 lead.

Anderson did not come out for the second inning, leaving the game with a sprained right ankle.

The Rays extended their lead in the third thanks to an RBI single by Roberts, and busted the game open in the fourth with an RBI single by Zobrist, followed by a two-run homer by Longoria.

Crisp's solo shot off Cobb in the seventh set the score at 8-3.

The Rays righthander left with one out in the eighth after giving up three runs on ten hits, walking one and striking out three.

Jamey Wright, Kyle Farnsworth and Fernando Rodney each had scoreless outings in relief.

Jeremy Hellickson (0-1, 4.91 ERA) can get the Rays just their second series win of 2013 with a win Saturday against Jarrod Parker (0-2, 11.08 ERA).  First pitch is scheduled for 7:10, with coverage on 620 WDAE starting at 6:00 with Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
