Rays Bats Continue Struggles In Boston, Fall 2-1 In Ten Innings

Shane Victorino’s RBI infield single in the bottom of the tenth was the difference in a pitcher’s duel between the Rays and Red Sox as Boston grabs a 2-1 win.  David Price went toe to toe with Jon Lester for seven innings, but the Rays in ability to hit with runners in scoring position caught up to them again.  The Rays finished the game 0-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Rays did get on the board first on a chilly afternoon in Boston.  In the third inning, Sean Rodriguez’ double down the left field line scored Desmond Jennings from first base, and the Rays were off and running to a 1-0.  Following the score by the Rays, the Red Sox simply shut down the Rays offense.  At one point Jon Lester retired twelve straight Rays hitters.

The Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on David Ross’ first home run of the season.  Ross’ shot on a 3-2 pitch from David Price over the “Green Monster” in left tied the game at one a piece.

The Rays offense didn’t have a runner reach second base from the fourth inning till the eighth inning.  The Rays had a great opportunity in the top of the ninth with two on and no outs, but the Red Sox bullpen came through as James Loney, Yunel Escobar and Ryan Roberts all were not able to advance Evan Longoria who ended the inning stuck on second base.

The Rays had another opportunity in the top of the tenth inning following a lead off double by Jose Molina, but Matt Joyce, Desmond Jennings and Sam Fuld were not able to take advantage of the Rays second great opportunity in as many innings.

The Red Sox won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning as Jacoby Ellsbury singled to center with one out in the frame.  Ellsbury then stole second base on backup catch Jose Lobaton, but Lobaton’s throw nipped the edge of Escobar’s glove and went into right center field.  Ellsbury advanced to third base on the error by  Lobaton leaving the situation for Shane Victorino to win the game.  Victorino’s infield single on a five man infield for the Rays won the game for the Boston Red Sox.

Brandon Gomes gets the loss for the Rays as Junichi Tazawa gets his second win of the season.  David Price pitched seven innings allowing a run on four hits and striking out eight.  The Rays used six pitchers in the game including two pitchers (Farnsworth, Ramos) who pitched 4 pitches or less in their outing.

The Rays will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon in Boston.  Alex Cobb will go against Clay Buchholz.  You can hear all the action beginning at 1:00pm on 620am WDAE with first pitch scheduled for 1:35pm.
