Rays Grab Division Lead With Win Over Yankees

by Eric Sachs (@RealEricSachs)

After a day off because of a rain out in Boston the Rays traveled up to New York to start a three game series and they did so with a bang. It was a six run 2nd inning that would help the Rays and Jeremy Hellickson beat C.C Sabathia and the Yankees 10-6 in game one of this weekend series.

Tampa Bay jumped ahead early and over the span of seventeen pitches they scored a half dozen runs. Ben Zobrist lead off the inning with a double and two batters later Yunel Escobar doubled to put the Rays on the board. Sam Fuld singled to score Escobar and then Desmond Jennings laid down a bunt that was thrown away by the catcher Austin Romine and the Rays had a 3-0 lead. Evan Longoria would then double to score two more runs and Wil Myers would then single to give Tampa Bay what was a 6-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

The Rays had a chance to add on and really put the game out of reach as they had bases loaded and no one out in the 3rd inning but couldn't push any runs across. New York would try to climb back in the game and after a Brent Lillibridge single and a Hellickson wild pitch; Austin Romine delivered an RBI single cutting the lead to five and making it a 6-1 game.

In the sixth inning, Tampa Bay extended the lead back to six runs with a two out single to center by James Loney scoring Sean Rodriguez giving the Rays a 7-1 lead. Continuing his hot streak Wil Myers singled to lead off the seventh inning extending his multi-hit game streak to seven games which is one shy of the club record set by Carl Crawford. After a Matt Joyce walk, Loney came up and crushed his 10th HR of the season and gave the Rays a 10-1 lead.

New York would add on a couple more runs in the bottom of the eighth and again in the ninth innings to close the gap, but it wasn't enough to get them back in the game as the Rays defeated the Yankees 10-6.

During the 10-6 victory in the Bronx the Rays got some help tonight for the Baltimore Orioles who defeated the Boston Red Sox which gave Tampa Bay a half game lead atop the AL East. The Rays will play game two of this three game series tomorrow at 1:07 PM with coverage stating on 620 WDAE at 12 PM.
