The Tampa Bay Rays won't start the second half of their schedule until Friday, when they begin a three-game series in Toronto, but most of the team showed for an optional workout Thursday afternoon before the flight north of the border.

"I didn't want them to do nothing," manager Joe Maddon said. "And we could not do anything in Toronto either, so we thought it was the best thing to do.  Just play catch, move your body around a little bit.  Hit in the cage.  Pitchers can throw on the side, and that kind of stuff so it's better than nothing."

The team could not schedule a workout at the Rogers Centre today because of the concert featuring Jay Z and Justin Timberlake scheduled for tonight at the venue.

21 of the 25 players took part in the workout.  Matt Moore and Ben Zobrist, returning from the All-Star Game in New York, were not present, and relievers Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney did not take the field.
