Rays stumble in Game 1, fall in Boston

Rays pitcher Matt Moore struggled through four innings, allowing Boston to take Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

Boston hitters took advantage of a struggling Matt Moore, tagging him for eight runs while Jon Lester withstood a couple of early runs, giving the Red Sox an 12-2 victory over the Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

Tampa Bay started off the scoring in the second inning, as Sean Rodriguez lifted a solo home run with two out for a 1-0 lead.  Ben Zobrist added a solo homer off his own off Lester to double the lead.

Things unraveledin the bottom of the fourth, as Dustin Pedroia led off with a single, then Wil Myers misjudged a fly ball by David Ortiz into a ground-rule double.  After Mike Napoli popped out, Jonny Gomes smacked a double off the wall to bring in both runners.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out for the second out, but Stephen Drew singled to break the tie, and Will Middlebrooks' doubled to score Drew.

Jacoby Ellsbury struck out but reached on a passed ball and Shane Victorino singled in Middlebrooks for a 5-2 lead.

Boston added three more runs in the fifth with a two-run double by Saltalamacchia and a single by Ellsbury for an 8-2 advantage, and plated four more in the eighth to set the score.

The Red Sox lead the best-of-five series 1-0.

Game 2 of the series will take place Saturday afternoon, as David Price takes on John Lackey.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:37. with pregame coverage on 620 WDAE and 95.3 FM starting at 4:00 with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.

TROP WILL HAVE NIGHT GAMES: Major League Baseball announced Friday that Games 3 and 4 of the American League Division Series, which will be played at Tropicana Field, will be night games.  Game 3 Monday is scheduled to start at 6:07, and Game 4 Tuesday will have an 8:37 start.  Each night's scheduled start is subject to change pending the outcomes of other series.
