Wednesday, Shaun White pulled out of the inaugural Slopestyle event in Sochi, but the U.S. didn't need him - we won the gold medal anyway.
Early Saturday morning, 20 year old Sage Kotsenburg from Park City, Utah captured the first gold in the XXII Winter Olympics by defeating Staale Sandbech of Norway, who grabbed silver and Canadian Mark McMorris, who fought through a broken rib, captured bronze as slopestyle made its Olympic debut.
At the medal ceremony, Kotsenburg, in true snowboarder fashion, had Sandech and McMorris join his on the first-place podium.
Shortly afterwards, Kotsenburg tweeted his excitement:
